All About Cyprus
I often get asked “Where in the world is Cyprus?” In short, it’s an island (3rd largest to be exact) in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea.
Our neighbors include:
Turkey (north)
Lebanon, Syria (west)
Egypt, Israel (south)
Quick stats:
_Member of the European Union (EU) since 2004
_Currency: Euro
_Attracts ~2.5 million visitors each year
_Popular vacation destination for Europeans
Language: Greek, Turkish & English
Major cities: Nicosia (capital), Larnaca, Famagusta, Limassol & Pafos
Airports: Larnaca International Airport (LCA) & Paphos International Airport (PFO)
Note: The relationship between Cyprus and Turkey has been strained for over 30 years when, in 1974, Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied the northern third of the island. Turkey established itself in the occupied land as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus — however, no international government (other than Turkey) recognizes it. There are ongoing and progressive talks centered around the re-unification of Cyprus between the Cyprus government and the de facto Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus government.
