It doesn’t take much effort to recognize that Cyprus has an overwhelming population of stray animals. The careless actions of many pet owners are at the root of this problem. Compounding the problem is that little has been done to educate the public about the new animal welfare laws (in effect since 2004) — and even less has been done to enforce the laws.
If you are interested in adding a pet to your household, please consider adopting one first. Various shelters across the island are beyond capacity, and unfortunately some animals are being euthanized. Here is a list of shelters you can call to get more information:
